The Winnipeg Jets have played 52 games this season, and I have manually tracked some micro-statistics for 46 of them.
(Note: The most recent game I have data for but everything in this article only contains 45/46 games, as I started this article prior to that game)
What Are Micro-Statistics
Micro-statistics, manual tracking, tracking data, transitional stats, etc… They all mean the same thing: these are data points not available using the NHL’s public play-by-play (PxP) database.
Private data companies like SportsLogiq, Stathletes, and InStat sell to NHL teams the same but superior (more accurate and more precise) data as the NHL PxP, but they also offer micro-statistics to increase the granularity and power potential of analytical models.
Well, that’s in a more optimal, fantasy world. In reality, often these micro-statistics are used by teams to confirm their own opinions and biases.
But I’ll get to that later.
